The land of thousand lakes, virgin forests and fairytale harbors, of small spits and numerous rocky islands stretches between the southern coast of the White Sea and the lake Ladoga. In the 14th century some churches were built on one of these islands thus initiating the foundation of the Valaam Monastery. In 1990 the Monastery resumed functioning under the Russian Orthodox Church.
A longer stay in St. Petersburg provides a good opportunity to broaden a traditional excursion program by taking a trip to Valaam Island. The pearl of the Russian North - the picturesque rocky Island Valaam - lies in front of a beautiful bay of the lake Ladoga. The island, about 30 sq. km large, is covered with forests spreading a unique microclimate over the whole island, and making its nature a fairytale. It used to attract admiring artists, writers and composers for centuries.
During the white nights you can join a romantic voyage on board a comfortable ship (m/s "Kronstadt" or m/s "St. Petersburg" - each for 320 passengers). There are comfortable well-arranged cabins, a big restaurant, 3 bars, music, video, and dancing halls. You will visit a unique island with its fairytale nature, and the Valaam Monastery attracting lots of pilgrims.
This fascinating trip can be arranged during a short navigation period in summer.
