The small, recently renovated hotel 'Marshal' is situated in the center of the city, close to the Neva embankment and to the building of the Smolny Cathedral. The original one-storey building was designed by architect Luigi Rusca in 1802 for the Household Cavalry Guards. The building is regarded to be an architectural monument, and a sample of the 19th century military architecture.
A number of great statesmen and Generals were listed in this Household Troops including Russian Emperor Peter I, and the first President of Finland Mannerheim. In 1999 the building was thoroughly reconstructed, and turned into a hotel.
