One of the oldest cities of Russia, Pskov, that used to be an advanced post on the western borders of Russia for many a century, celebrated its 1100th anniversary.

The city is a real depository of the mysteries of the ancient Russia. The history of Pskov can be traced down to the 10th century when the city played a significant role defending Russia from Lithuanians and Swedes. Pskov was an important trade center due to its favorable position at the confluence of the two rivers - Pskova and Velikaya falling into the Lake Peipus.

Day 1

Arrival in Pskov before noon. Traditional Russian welcome with "bread & salt" and with a Russian folklore show. Sightseeing tour of the city begins with a visit to the Pskov Kremlin. The three-folded Cathedral built at the end of the 17th century rises behind the white walls of the Kremlin. The Grand Princes undertook their numerous campaigns from this church that became a burial ground for them and the Bishops.

Visit to an icon-painting workshop in the St. John Cathedral, conversation with a priest about the everyday life of monks in modern monasteries.

Lunch in the fireplace room at the pancakes house of Izhorsk on the way to the famous Petchory Cave Monastery.

Afternoon tour of the Ascension Monastery: Walk along the territory of the Monastery, visit to the Caves of the Holy Mountain - the burial ground of monks, defenders of the monastery and its benefactors (there are 7 galleries 217 meters long).

Return flight to St. Petersburg.
