Russian Railways will change the numbering of their fast speed trains. From 1 June on instead of old numbers from 151 to 180, the fast moving trains will get numbers starting from 700. This change will involve Sapsan and Allegro trains as well as Nevsky Express and, possibly, Lastochka trains on Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod line.
Apparently the decision is made because the increase in the number of fast moving trains and lack of the available numbering for them that been assigned in Soviet time. As the result same numbers where used in different directions that at times led to some ambiguity.
The new numbering is split into two pools. Trains numbered from 701 to 750 will be traditional ones travelling on the lines where the speed does not exceed 200 km/h. It is mostly the railway Moscow- Nizhny Novgorod. The numbers from 751 are given to the lines with speed limit over 200 km/h – the Sapsans and Nevsky Express between Moscow and St.Petersburg as well as Allegro trains bound to Finland.
Normally, two last digits of the present train number will remain the same. So, Sapsan train #151 will become #751, #166 will become #766 and so on. The former numbers will be given by trains moving with slower speed.
