Sheremetyev Palace
The site, on the Fontanka river, was presented by Peter the Great to field marshal Sheremetyev in 1712. The centerpiece of the former family estate of the Sheremetyevs, one of the Russia’s richest families, is the palace, which was built by Chevakinsky in 1750-1755. The palace underwent several reconstructions and got its final shape by the beginning of the last century. At these days, the palace houses two museums: Museum of instruments and Anna Akhmatova (one of Russia’s greatest 20th century poets) memorial museum.
