Theatre and music art museum
Founded in 1918, the museum is housed in the building of the former directorate of the Imperial theatres (built in late 20s-early 30s of the 19th century). The present display, which numbers over 40000 items, is based on the private collection founded in 1883 by I.Gorbunov, the actor of the Russia’s oldest Alexandrinsky drama theatre. Of special museum’s pride are the works by the Russian artists from the “The world of art” association (A.Benua, L.Bakst), as well as those by Russian avant-gardists (K.Malevich, V. Tatlin). The real gem of the museum’s collection is the unique collection of dancing slippers of the greatest Russian ballerinas.
